Trickett Psychotherapy offers comprehensive treatment options for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a severe mental health condition that can develop after exposure to a life-threatening event such as combat, natural disasters, car accidents, or sexual assault. PTSD is characterized by prolonged periods of distress, with symptoms that may include flashbacks, avoidance behaviors, negative changes in thoughts and feelings, and heightened states of arousal. These symptoms can disrupt daily life and may not emerge until months or years after the traumatic event.
Our approach to PTSD treatment includes trauma-focused psychotherapies like Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which helps individuals reframe negative thoughts related to trauma; Prolonged Exposure (PE), which reduces the power of trauma memories by repeated, controlled exposure; and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which facilitates the processing of traumatic memories through directed attention exercises. Alongside psychotherapy, we may recommend medications such as SSRIs or SNRIs to help manage symptoms.
Treating PTSD must be tailored to each individual’s needs, with the goal of reducing symptoms, improving function, and helping individuals regain a sense of control over their lives. Available both in-person in Guelph and online, our treatments also aim to address commonly associated issues such as depression, anxiety, substance use, and relationship challenges, offering a holistic approach to recovery.
